ADEK launches 2nd Summer Program with leading international universities

ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has launched a new edition of its Summer Program, designed to upskill, prepare, and empower Emirati students to explore their passion through unique opportunities to study at 14 leading universities in 12 countries across four continents.

A total of 181 top-performing Emirati students in grades 10 and 11 across public, private, and charter schools in Abu Dhabi have been selected from ADEK enrichment programmes including the Rize UPCG, Rize Honors, and Sports programmes.

Selected students will be able to explore pathways at top educational institutions in the US, India, China, Singapore, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand and study from a variety of new majors across Creative Industries and Design, Culinary Arts, Education and Culture, Entrepreneurship, Music Performance, Wildlife Conservation, and more.

The academic opportunity aims to align with the ongoing objectives to upskill aspiring and t
alented students, help them develop a global mindset, expand their knowledge, engage with different cultures, and empower their academic, and personal growth internationally. Students participating in the programme will have a higher chance of being accepted into the Abu Dhabi Scholarships programme.

The expanded list of universities includes four of the world’s top universities, including Harvard University; Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; and National University of Singapore (NUS).

Mubarak Hamad Al Mheiri, Under-Secretary of ADEK, said, ‘Following a successful programme last year, this expansion – terms of the number of students, countries, universities involved, and the number of programs available – underlines our commitment to nurturing even more talented and aspiring students and empowering them to expand their knowledge beyond classroom boundaries.’

‘ADEK Summer Program students are encouraged to pursue post-secondary studies internationally at top-tier and recognised univer
sities and discover their passion. This will also equip them with the required future skills across critical growth sectors in the emirate and globally.’

To ensure student readiness for international studies, ADEK organises a comprehensive series of pre-departure orientation sessions for each student group traveling to their respective international universities.

The sessions are designed to provide students with extensive knowledge to navigate the international academic journeys and maximise their potential for success.

Hamdan bin Zayed visits 20th Liwa Date Festival

AL DHAFRA: H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region, has visited the 20th Liwa Date Festival, held in Al Dhafra Region until 28th July 2024.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan underlined the event’s role in highlighting the historical status of palms, protecting cultural heritage, as well as supporting sustainable development and food security.

He toured pavilions participating in the festival, which is organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority and was briefed on the heritage activities and competitions for date farmers and producers.

Sheikh Hamdan lauded the organising efforts, and the effective participation of entities from public and private sectors to support the preservation of UAE’s intangible heritage.

A number of officials accompanied Sheikh Hamdan during the tour.

UAE Attorney-General orders immediate investigation, trial for Bangladeshi nationals charged with rioting, disruption, property damage

ABU DHABI: Chancellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, UAE Attorney-General, has ordered an immediate investigation into the arrested Bangladeshi nationals who gathered and incited riots in several streets across the UAE on Friday.

A team from the Public Prosecution has commenced investigating the arrested suspects.

The investigations, conducted under the direct supervision of the UAE Attorney-General, revealed that the suspects committed crimes of gathering in a public place and protesting against their home government with the intent to incite unrest, obstruct the enforcement of laws and regulations, disrupt individual interests, cause harm and danger to others, violate their rights, disrupt traffic, and damage both public and private property. They also deliberately disrupted transportation, called for and incited these demonstrations, and recorded and disseminated audiovisual footage of these acts online, which constitute offences against state security and public order, and jeopardise the UAE’s interests.

Ba
sed on the preliminary investigation results, the Public Prosecution has ordered their pre-trial detention pending further investigations. Furthermore, the UAE Attorney-General has directed that the suspects be referred to an expedited trial.

Dr. Al Shamsi urged people residing in the country to adhere to its laws and refrain from engaging in planning and carrying out such activities, as they constitute serious crimes with a severe impact on the community, with harsh penalties for the perpetrators.

UAE welcomes ICJ’s announcement that continued Israeli policies including expansion of settlements violate international legitimacy

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates welcomed the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that regards Israeli policies including the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as a violation of international law.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed the UAE’s rejection of all measures aimed at altering the historical and legal status of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and all practices in contravention of resolutions on international legitimacy, which threaten further escalation and instability in the region, and impede endeavours to achieve peace and stability.

The Ministry stressed the need to support all regional and international efforts to advance the peace process in the Middle East, as well as end illegal practices that undermine the two-state solution, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

UAE sends 100 aid convoys to Gaza Strip since launch of ‘Operation Chivalrous Knight 3’

ABU DHABI: The number of humanitarian and relief aid convoys sent by the UAE to the Gaza Strip has reached 100 since the launch of ”Operation Chivalrous Knight 3”, which contributed to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian brothers from the repercussions of the war, with the entry of the first relief aid shipment on 24th November 2023.

The UAE convoys of relief aid contained medical equipment, food parcels, Emirati dates, shelter tents, food supplies, clothes, water, baby formula, parcels for children and women, blankets, relief bags, ambulances, and water tanks and sewage systems. The aid convoys carried more than 20,000 tonnes, transported by approximately 1,000 trucks through the Rafah Border Crossing.

Four convoys were sent after the invasion of Rafah with a load estimated at 320 tonnes, which included shelter tents and food parcels targeting the displaced and those affected by the difficult conditions they are going through and due to the lack of necessities of life.

The health sector was als
o supported with urgent medical aid, including more than 16 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies.

Through these relief convoys, the UAE is contributing to alleviating the suffering of those displaced as a result of the war and meeting their basic and medical needs, and continuing the approach of the late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in providing relief to the affected and displaced people of brotherly and friendly countries, setting a global model for humanitarian work.

11 killed, over 30 missing after bridge in north China collapses due to heavy rains

BEIJING: A bridge collapse caused by torrential rains in northern China has killed 11 people and left more than 30 missing, state media said on Saturday.

The bridge over a river in Shaanxi province’s Shangluo buckled at around 8.40pm on July 19 ‘due to a sudden downpour and flash floods’, state news agency Xinhua said, citing the provincial public relations department.

State broadcaster CCTV said nearly 20 vehicles and more than 30 people remained missing after the highway bridge collapsed into the river below.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged ‘all-out efforts’ to find those still missing, CCTV said.

UAE Market inaugurated in Qingdao celebrating 40 years of UAE-China relations

QINGDAO: The UAE today inaugurated its UAE Market in Qingdao, China, as part of the UAE-China Friendship Festival. The event, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of UAE-China diplomatic relations, will run until 21st July, showcasing a wide range of Emirati products and arts to the Chinese people.

The market features specialised pavilions showcasing and selling dates, traditional handicrafts, and popular Emirati cuisine, alongside a special exhibition documenting the development of ties between the two countries.

The market also hosts events that include Emirati artistic performances and traditional art workshops, all within a comprehensive cultural programme spotlighting the UAE national identity.

This event is part of a series of activities held in both countries to mark four decades of diplomatic ties, aiming to enhance mutual understanding and open new avenues for cooperation across various fields.

Israeli occupation’s PM confirms strikes on Yemen

Prime Minister of the Israeli occupation government Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Saturday that the occupation air forces have carried out strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, mainly Al-Hodeidah Port in Western Yemen.

“The port we attacked … was used for military purposes and as an entrance point to lethal weapons provided to the Houthis via Iran,” he said.

He added that strikes hit targets 1,800 km away and warned that Israel would attack anyone who attacks it.

Kuwait refutes rumors about schistosomiasis outbreak

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health Saturday denied rumors on social media about the outbreak of cases of schistosomiasis (bilharzia) at some restaurants in the country.

In a press release, the ministry confirmed that no cases have been reported in the country, explaining that schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease transmitted through swimming in polluted freshwater.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that a restaurant has been closed due to a number of food poisoning cases, reassuring that those affected by the food poisoning have already recovered, while some are still recovering.

It added that it is diligently working with the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition to ensure food safety and promote public hygiene.

Kuwaiti girl chairs 4th Arab child parl’t session in Sharjah

Kuwait’s Jenan Al-Sharif presided over the fourth session of the Arab child parliament in the UAE’s Sharjah during Kuwaiti delegation’s participation in the session titled “societal responsibility of MPs”.

During the session, the conferees discussed societal responsibility and MP’s key role in raising awareness about the needs of Arab children, and offering initiatives required for sustainable development and social justice.

Fifty-four children from 16 Arab countries took part in the session and spoke about their experiments and views on how to enhance the role of MPs in boosting social rights and duties of children.

Speaking to KUNA, Bader Al-Eenzi, head of Ministry of Education’s psychological and social service department and delegation’s supervisor, said Kuwait’s participation was effective through launching initiatives related to the session’s topic.

The Arab child parliament is an Arab League institution in which four male and female children of each member country take part.

In 2023, Al-Sharif was
elected as the parliament’s president of the third session for two years.

Kuwait’s military attaché in Beijing awarded China’s highest military medal

Chinese Ministry of Defense’s international military cooperation office has granted Kuwait’s military attaché in Beijing Real Admiral Nuaman Al-Rashid People’s Liberation Army’s medal, August 1 Medal.

The honoring took place during a ceremony where Colonel Chen Li, head of West Asia office at the ministry, received Al-Rashid to grant him the medal, in recognition of his endeavors during his tenure at Kuwait’s Embassy in China, Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement received by KUNA.

Al-Rashid expressed appreciation for this medal, extolling the deep-rooted and distinguished relations between the two countries in all fields, mainly military, it added.

The “August I Medal” is the highest honoring of China’s army given to Al-Rashid, in recognition of his efforts aimed at boosting military cooperation between the two countries.

It is also awarded to military men who made outstanding contributions to the protection of national sovereignty, security and development interests.
