35th Jerash festival to begin September 22, announces Ayed

Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Higher Committee of Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts, Ali Ayed, announced the festival is scheduled to begin its 35th edition’s activities on September 22, under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II in the ancient city of Jerash.

Speaking at a press conference held Thursday at Royal Cultural Center, Ayed said this year’s festival will run to next October 2 within a health protocol prepared for this purpose.

The 2021 festival’s activities coincide with Jordan’s celebrations of its centenary anniversary, which would reflect values and traditions entrenched over a hundred years in various cultural and social aspects, Ayed told the press.

Noting the importance to protect public health, Ayed said the government decided to adhere to the health protocol using “Sanad” app. inside the festival’s venues, and adhere to a seat capacity less than 50% in theaters and halls.

Reservations will be made online, he said, adding that seat capacity in the festival’s Southern Theater will stand at 2,500 only, while its Northern Theater will host 1,500 visitors.

As one of the leading cultural events in Middle East and North Africa, Jerash Festival was first held in 1981, which was then cancelled three times, in 1982, 2006 and in 2008 for three years. In 2011 the government revived the event.
