Algeria spent USD 225 million for catastrophes-cause damage — PM

Algerian Prime Minister Aymen Benabderrahmane revealed on Saturday that his country spent USD 225 million per annum over the past 15 years to repair damage caused by natural catastrophes.

Seventy percent of the expenditures were allotted for post floods’ repair, said the prime minister in the inaugural speech of the international Scientific and Technical Forum, themed, “limiting hazards caused by earthquakes.” Earthquakes inflicted most costly damage, estimated at USD ten billion, in addition to the deaths that reached 6,771, he said.

The prime minister called for building earthquake-resistant buildings and engaging the civil society for enhancing public awareness of the dangers caused by the quakes.

He cited as a successful example construction of the quake-proof Algeria Mosque.
