Amman, Amman Mayor, Yousef Shawarbeh, participated in the 6th Congress of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders in Durban, South Africa.
Amin Amman participated as a keynote speaker at a policy session within the City Hall track devoted to dialogue and discussion of multiple themes including accessible and inclusive cities, gender equality and women's empowerment, the right to the city, slum upgrading, and the partnership for sustainable urban development, the Great Amman Municipality (GAM) said in a statement.
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and eThekwini Municipality hosted the summit, which concluded on Friday, with the participation of global leaders, mayors, advisory councils and experts representing cities and major capitals of the seven regions / civil society organizations, experts and academic figures.
Shawarbeh said securing a safe transportation of people with disabilities to enable them to integrate into society and carry out their work is a challenge and a translation of policies and legislation, by applying national and international building codes to existing public and service buildings and under construction and preparing sidewalks to serve them.
He pointed out that the GAM has developed a strategy to enhance the public transport system by updating the master plan for transport and mobility by providing buses the "Amman Bus" with a criteria that takes into account securing a loading and unloading parking lots and equipped to serve people with disabilities and the elderly, which is also provide access to the Internet.
On the sidelines of the gathering, the Amman Mayor held meeting with his mayors and heads of international organizations counterparts on issues related to cities and urban development.
