Aqaba port crane failure leaves 12 dead, 260 injured

Twelve people were killed and 260 others injured, including 123 who are cuurently under treatment in hospitals, in the Aqaba Port on Monday after a crane malfunction caused the drop of a gas tank and an explosion, according to the National Center for Security and Crisis Management (NCSCM).

As of the first moment of the accident, HRH Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, followed up on evacuation and rescue operations carried out by competent authorities, and followed up on developments of the accident from inside the NCSCM operations room.

The explosion happened when the crane tried to place the gas tank on a ship; nonetheless, it failed to move it all the way and dropped it midway, causing a major explosion and a leakage of poisonous gas, as footage from the site show.
