CENG Department of Architectural and Civil Engineering (CAE) and Office of Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies (ADRGS) organized on November 20 the second inaugural professorial lecture titled Smart Infrastructure: talking tunnels, self-sensing bridges, simulation and artificial intelligence.
The lecture was delivered by CENG Qatari Diar-Saudi Bin Laden Group (QDSBG) Chair Dr Mohammed Elshafie. Attendees included CENG Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Abbes Amira and CAE Head Dr Mohammed Hussein, as well as CENG faculty and students and representatives from industry.
Dr Mohammed Elshafie highlighted the demand to change the construction industry needs. Without fast action, the industry will inevitably face inexorable decline throughout the upcoming years, he said, adding, According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), in the years up to 2020, the world will experience a fourth industrial revolution due to the rapid development of technologies such as sensors, artificial intelligence and 3D printing. Digitally enhanced or smart infrastructure will therefore be a core aspect of this new digital world in the infrastructure sector that will revolutionize how infrastructure is delivered, managed and automatically controlled.
He added: In addition to the direct technical knowledge gained from these case studies, it will be argued, that the traditional roles, business models and measures of value within the industry are all set to change; hence, the infrastructure sector needs to recalibrate itself to meet this change.
