Doha, Qatar Chess Association organized on Sunday a ceremony on the occasion of the launch of the Fide World Rapid and Blitz Championships, which will start tomorrow at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena.

The event which begins on Monday will continue until 30 December. It is attended by around more than 400 players from 75 countries and more than 5700 participants from national federations, delegations, technicians and journalists in addition to around 30,000 fans and millions of spectators from all over the world.

The opening ceremony was attended by President of Qatar Chess Association Khalifa Al Hitmi and President of the European Chess Federation Zurab Azmaiparashvili, and a representative of the international federation, among others.

Khalifa Al Hitmi welcomed the attendees and wished success to all the participating players, expressing at the same time his hope for successful tournament both in term of organizational and technical aspects. This will eventually contribute to the development and spread of this sport, he said.

Al Hitmi added that he was confident that this world championship will be distinctive at both technical and organizational levels, adding that the competition will be very tough as prominent chess champions are taking part, led by Norwegian Magnus Carlsen winner of the World Chess Championship 2016.

President of the European Chess Federation Zurab Azmaiparashvili said he was delighted to be here in Doha and to participate in the organization of the Fide World Rapid and Blitz Championships, wishing the tournament every success.
