Manama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, received here today the outgoing UN Resident Coordinator in Bahrain, Amin El-Sharkawi.

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Affairs, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, was present.

Dr. Al-Zayani hailed Mr. El-Sharkawi’s prominent efforts during his term in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which contributed to the development of cooperation and friendly relations between the Kingdom and the United Nations Organisation, and helped expand those relations to reach a distinct partnership.

The Foreign Minister stressed that the Kingdom of Bahrain shares the same goals and visions with the UN, which grant a safe life and a more prosperous future for humanity through implementing the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and supporting creative initiatives in this regard.

Dr. Al-Zayani mentioned the signing of the Strategic Partnership Framework Agreement between the Kingdom of Bahrain and 16 UN agencies 2018-2022, in the context of exchanging expertise, supporting future projects and focusing on national priorities, including optimal investment in the human element, promoting institutional capabilities and ensuring citizen satisfaction in accordance with the highest levels of international quality standards. He also stated that the international confidence in the national achievements contributed to increasing the number of international agencies and offices residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain, from five agencies to ten.

The Foreign Minister added that the last years were filled with strategic projects between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the UN, including investing in renewable energy, sustainable communities, innovation, technology and infrastructure, in addition to promoting capacity-building, women empowerment, future economy and many others. He also noted in this regard the leading global initiatives that support achieving the sought objectives of the UN, which include King Hamad Youth Empowerment Award to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which is one of the exceptional international initiatives as it targets the world's youth in order to invest their creative energies.

Dr. Al-Zayani valued the efforts of Mr. El-Sharkawi to promote cooperation between the UN and various government and private agencies and the civil society in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which contributed to the consolidation of the foundations of a comprehensive and growing partnership. He also said that the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, succeeded in providing a model for creating the appropriate environment for development, coexistence and progress, expressing his pride in the Kingdom for being at the forefront in responding to the goals and noble purposes of the United Nations.

Mr. El-Sharkawi expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Kingdom of Bahrain and the task force of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also valued the fruitful cooperation of the Kingdom with the UN and its various agencies in order to achieve the sought objectives, stressing that the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the wise leadership of His Majesty the King, provided a global modal for development and tolerance.
