Bamako, February 25 (QNA) - French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian underlined that the peace process in the northern Mali is on the right track, after Malian soldiers staged their first joint patrol on Thursday with rival armed groups in the town of Gao.

Le Drian met with President of Mali Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in the capital Bamako on Saturday.

The operational launch of the first joint patrol in Gao was organized within the framework of the peace and reconciliation process between the Malian armed forces and the various movements that signed the Algiers agreement.

The long-awaited patrol is part of an initiative aimed at easing local tensions so that government forces can focus on fighting the militants. More such patrols are due over the next few weeks under the terms of the 2015 UN-brokered peace deal. (QNA
