German defense minister suggests forming European military forces

German Defense Minister, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer intends to present a proposal aimed at strengthening the European Union (EU) military missions through the formation of alliances by EU member states.

“I think that Article 44 of the European treaties gives us the opportunity to issue joint decisions from the EU and implement European missions through alliances formed by member states willing to form these alliances,” German’s Deutsche Welle cited Karrenbauer as saying.

“We are preparing a proposal that is expected to be discussed in October during the bloc’s defense ministers meeting,” Karrenbauer added.

Karenbauer indicated that she called on the EU to address matters specifically and discuss how decisions are made, who leads the forces, what units will be assigned to the mission and what are the support forces.
