Amman, Jordan strongly condemned Israel’s arrest of chairman of the Jerusalem Awqaf Council, Sheikh Abdul Azim Salhab, early Sunday.

Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Abdul Nasser Abul Basal, said that the Israeli action, which also included issuing an arrest warrant for General Director of the Jerusalem Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department Sheikh Azzam Al-Khatib, is a dangerous and an unacceptable escalation that affects the Jordanian role in caring for Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

The minister called for the immediate release of the detainees and the cancellation of the arrest warrant for Sheikh Al-Khatib.
