Jordan’s electrical imports down by 50% in 2021

Jordan’s electrical and electronics imports have dropped by nearly 50 percent in 2021 compared to 2019, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the Kingdom, representative of electrical and home appliances sector at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, Hatem Al-Zoubi, said on Monday.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), Al-Zoubi indicated that imports’ value of electrical and electronic devices, large lighting and firefighting equipment, and renewable energy supplies in 2019 amounted to about JD2 billion, which inched down by 30% in 2020.

“Such decline gives indications of the stagnation experienced by the electrical market due to the remarkable increase in prices, and the lack of money liquidity available to consumers,” he pointed out.

Al-Zoubi also called for reactivating the Jordanian-Syrian agreement to reduce the burdens incurred by traders in various sectors, stressing that reopening the border crossings and activating the deal would positively affect the local market and the national economy.
