Land shipping with Iraq, Syria “modest”, but “promising”

The movement of freight trucks through border crossings with Iraq and Syria is still modest, but is expected to pick up as haulers are poised for increased business after the reopening of border crossings, according to Truck Owners Syndicate president Mohammad Khair Al-Daoud.

He said in an interview with Petra Tuesday that the resumption of door-to-door transport with Iraq and the reopening of the Jaber (Nassib) border post at full capacity with Syria in addition to Jordanian incentives, have motivated traders and industrialists for cross-border trade.

Al-Daoud said he hoped direct cross-border transport will see a boost for its economic impact on the three countries, pointing to the strategic importance of Aqaba Port for imports and exports, especially with East Asian countries.

He said that over 500 visas have been granted to Jordanian truckers since door-to-door commerce was restored, adding that about 4,000 others have obtained security approval
