Doha, - Lekhwiya claimed the 2016-17 Qatar Stars League title after coming back from one goal down to beat Al Ahli 2-1 at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on Thursday thanks to a 95th minute winner from South Korean international Nam Tae-Hee.
The title is Lekhwiya's fifth after winning it in four previous occasions in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015.
Lekhwiya came required all three points as they hoped to maintain a two-point lead over Al Sadd going into the last game of the season. They were, however, handed the title after Al Sadd failed to beat Al Sailiya, only managing a 2-2 draw to seal the title for Lekhwiya.
Al Ahli started the game well and were gifted an early goal on four minutes when Lekhwiya's Khalid Radwan played a shocking back pass to the goalkeeper which Al Ahli's Ali Fereydoun pounced on and smashed into the back of the net.
Lekhwiya soon settled and regrouped to equalize on 31 minutes thanks to a stunning goal from Ismail Mohamed who spotted a large gap in between Ahli's center backs, running through them from the halfway line and controlling a 30 yard through-ball that left him with Al Ahli goalkeeper to beat and he duly did to make it one apiece.
Lekhwiya continued to press for a second for the remainder of the first half but were unable to find the back of the net again and it finished 1-1 at half time.
They came out in the second half with a lot more desire and pressed from the whistle, but despite dominating possession, they struggled to create any clear-cut chances.
Lekhwiya continued to press deep into injury time until the 95th minute brought the victory when Nam Tae-Hee was gifted the ball in the 18 yard box. The ball fell perfectly for the South Korean who drilled it into the back of the net to give Lekhwiya the win and claim the title. (QNA)
