Lithuania closed Today two of the six border crossings linking it with neighboring Belarus, in the face of risks posed by the Russian private military group Wagner.
Lithuania’s decision also aims to combat smuggling. In addition to that, Lithuania is seeking to limit the number of trips between the two countries. In the first half of this year, it recorded 230,000 transit trips for Lithuanians across the border with Belarus.
Lithuania, which shares a nearly 680-kilometer border with Belarus, fears that the Minsk authorities will take advantage of this to try to recruit spies from among these travelers through extortion or other means of pressure.
Poland and Lithuania have built a fence along their borders with Belarus and Russia, accusing the two countries of planning to facilitate the passage of migrants into the European Union with the aim of destabilizing it.
