More than 3,000 people lost in sea crossings to Europe in 2021, U.N. report says

More than 3,000 refugees, migrants and asylum seekers died or went missing last year while trying to reach Europe via Mediterranean and Atlantic sea routes, a U.N. refugee agency report showed on Friday, reporting the highest toll in recent years.

In 2021, according to the report, a total of 1,924 people were reported dead or missing on the Central and Western Mediterranean routes, while an additional 1,153 died or went missing on the Northwest African maritime route to the Canary Islands.
