Representatives of national institutions and international bodies on Saturday opened a workshop discussing Jordan’s progress towards reducing greenhouse emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Environment under support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs) Partnership, tackled high-level mechanisms of coordination and cooperation to ensure the Kingdom meets its NCDs.
The event is part of the ministry’s follow-up on the Kingdom’s efforts to realize its NCDs in priority areas in terms of mitigation and adaptation, according to a statement by the Ministry of Environment.
Under the NCDs, a set of goals has been set for the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy through a number of methodologies and tools, such as increasing the share of renewables in the overall energy mix. Moreover, the NCDs plan cover other key sectors, including, but not limited to, water and healthcare.
Minister of Environment Nabil Masarweh stressed the need to formulate the workshop’s outputs in a clear and actionable manner, noting that the ministry will adopt the workshop’s outcomes once they are issued.
The workshop was attended by delegates from various regional and international institutions and bodies such as the European Union (EU), the World Bank (WB), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), GIZ, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), UN-Habitat and the Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs) Partnership.
