Mexico City, – Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Germany’s Angelique Kerber 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the final of the WTA event in Monterrey to hand the world number one another disappointment in a year that has so far been without a tournament win.
The three-set win for Pavlyuchenkova marked her fourth victory over Kerber so far in her career in nine matches, and was the second time the Russian had beaten Kerber in the final of the Mexican tournament, after 2013.
Kerber dominated the early phases of the match, but then struggled suddenly with her serve, allowing Pavlyuchenkova to close the first set in 41 minutes, 6-4.
In the second set, Kerber broke Pavlyuchenkova twice to level the match, before the big-hitting Russian raced out to a 5-0 lead in the final set. She won the tournament on her second match point. (QNA)
