PM chairs meeting of Supreme Committee for addressing flood damage


The Higher Committee for Inventorying and Treating Damage Resulting from Rains and Torrents, held a meeting on Saturday under the chairmanship of Caretaker Prime Minister Dr. Abdulaziz Saleh bin Habtoor.

The meeting, which included Deputy Prime Minister for Services and Development Affairs Dr. Hussein Maqbouli, Ministers of Public Works and Roads Ghaleb Mutlaq, Local Administration Ali Al-Qaisi, Agriculture and Irrigation Eng. Abdul Malik Al-Thawr and Water and Environment Eng. Abdul Raqib Al-Sharmani, was devoted to identifying preparations related to the rainy season for the current year at the central and local levels.

The meeting, which was attended by a number of specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, Meteorology, Civil Defense and the Historic Cities Preservation Authority, discussed ways to reduce collateral damage of torrential rains on lives, public and private property and agricultural land.

The Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Maqbouli, reviewed a report on the inventory and tre
atment of damage caused by rain and floods for the past year 2023, prepared by the Technical Assistant Committee of the Supreme Committee. He explained that the report included an analytical study on weather conditions and the size of losses during the past year with a scientific assessment of the interventions required by the competent authorities.

He touched on the preparedness plan for the current year, with a precise identification of difficulties and obstacles and recommendations for solutions to reduce or overcome them.

Dr. Maqbouli stressed the need to address the difficulties and obstacles, especially financial ones, and to support the Civil Defense Authority and provide the required capabilities to carry out its regular and emergency humanitarian duties in accordance with the Cabinet’s decision on supporting the Authority.

He pointed to the importance of the work of all concerned and relevant authorities represented in the committee through a single window and a central operations room in the Coun
cil of Ministers, as well as the preparation of the necessary studies on climate change because of its positive impact on the activity of the Supreme Committee.
