Doha, - Algeria's Baghdad Bounedjah began his assault on the top goal scorer accolade successfully this week, scoring a goal in his team's 4-1 drubbing of Al Rayyan.

The striker's hopes of winning the accolade received a boost after current top scorer Youssef Al Arabi received a season-ending injury. The two strikers have been fiercely competing for the honor since the beginning of the league. Al Arabi scored 24 goals this season, one more than Bounedjah. There are only two matches left in the season. Third place is for current player of the month Rodrigo Tabata, he has 17. Al Arabi scored seven penalties this season, compared to Bounedjah's five.
