QU President to QNA: Wise Leadership’s Support Led to Achievements, World University Ranking Advance -1-

The QU has started to enter the world of digital space in collaboration with Metavisionaries Company, in a bid to record the name of Qatar and its impacts in this aspect, His Excellency said.

As part of its caring for the environment, QU seeks to introduce modern technology and use it in research and to establish a seed unit for Qatar’s native plants, and to develop its DNA fingerprinting to publicize it globally and benefit from it in issues of sustainability and food security, he added.

In a related context, he stated that QU has accomplished many research and projects related to the environment at the QU’s Environmental Science Center, as part of supporting the State’s endeavors towards achieving food security and sustainability. These projects include the constantly evolving Qatar University Herbarium, the country’s oldest herbarium with 3,200 plant samples.

He also touched on a project to produce a gel to support food security, a robot project to preserve green spaces, and a mushroom-shaped artificial coral reef forest project that was designed, developed, and verified for its effectiveness within QU’s facilities.

This new and innovative technology contributes to restoring the ecosystem of coral reefs under the sea and the associated biodiversity, he said, pointing out that this technology has recently arrived on the coast of Brazil as a Qatari product. The QU President also highlighted projects to cultivate algae and prolong the fruit life.

He revealed the establishment of the first factory for fresh vegetables on campus, based on the latest scientific technologies in this field, including hydroponics. The factory is expected to provide leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, watercress, and others, which enhances self-sufficiency in these agricultural products, he added.

He also announced the imminent completion of preparing a new strategy for QU, which will represent the largest shift to self-based learning, understanding, research, innovation, experimentation, and the use of technology to produce a sustainable knowledge economy through QU Holding Company. This shift contributes to the comprehensive renaissance taking place in Qatar and transform ideas and research into practical application and projects on the ground.

To achieve this approach, QU opened the Digital Learning and Online Education (DLOE) Office, new colleges, departments, and programs, as well as programs in cooperation with various state institutions, he said, adding that the expansion is qualitative and quantitative at the same time, and copes with the requirements of the National Vision 2030.

He revealed that the new strategy includes reviewing current programs and opening new colleges, departments and programs that respond to the requirements of the current and future generations and the requirements of Qatar National Vision 2030. It also provides the requirements for interacting with the digital age and the tremendous technical development and optimally employing it in education and work so that QU has an important impact on the renaissance of Qatar and its aspired and deserved future.

He stressed that QU has succeeded in achieving more than 90 percent of its current strategy (2018-2023), despite the challenges that faced the whole world, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, and the restrictions and measures imposed to reduce it.

QU was able to turn this ordeal into a grant and proceed to achieve what was included in that strategy, and everyone notices the great differences and the great progress it has made at the local, regional and international levels, he said.

He said that QU today ranks second in the Arab world, and ranks 208 in the world, and has obtained institutional accreditation from several international bodies, including WASC. Some of QU’s colleges have obtained academic accreditations from other international institutions, in light of its high-quality educational environment and outstanding academic education that contributes to building a knowledge economy and meets national needs.

He expressed his belief that academic and institutional accreditation represents an attraction factor for students and researchers from inside and outside the country to join QU because of its international reputation and the ideal and high-quality educational and academic environment it provides in line with national and international standards. It will also be an additional incentive and source of pride for all its members, he added.

In a related context, he indicated that QU has pursued excellence in education, restructuring the current programs and providing new programs that respond to the requirements of the national renaissance and the tremendous international scientific, technological and technical development witnessed in some world countries including Qatar.

He touched on practical and research efforts, publishing and knowledge transfer, highlighting the launch of the QU Publishing House to be a gateway to transferring and introducing knowledge, literary and cultural production to the local and external communities. (MORE)
