QU President to QNA: Wise Leadership’s Support Led to Achievements, World University Ranking Advance

HE President of Qatar University (QU) Dr. Hassan bin Rashid Al Derham underlined that the support given by the wise leadership to education was primarily behind the achievements made by QU in various academic, corporate and research levels, positioning itself as a leading institution among the international universities.

In an exclusive interview with Qatar News Agency on the occasion of celebrating the graduation of 46th batch of QU students (on Monday & Tuesday), HE President of QU said that all institutions in the country receive care from the wise leadership represented in HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, as His Highness provides top priority and unlimited support to education, to build clear-minded individuals armed with contemporary knowledge as well as the ability to handle national responsibilities.

In addition, HE President of QU noted the support and care the university is receiving from HH the Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Thani who chairs its board of trustees, pointing out that the graduation ceremony is a fruit of long effort that deserves to be honored.

Building human and graduating qualified cadres in various disciplines are one of the most important and fundamental objectives for QU, Al Derham said. In addition to the 46th batch, there is a batch of thousands of graduates, who have been, and will always have a positive and constructive impact on each corner of the country, he added.

The university celebrates the graduation of the 46th batch of male and female graduates while topping the ranks of the higher education institutions at the national level, he added, pointing out that it is the first national higher education’s institution that takes precedence over numerous Arab and international universities that preceded QU in decades, which is a source of pride.

The university today is at the cusp of a new era at different levels with new vision and sophisticated strategy that harmonize with the objectives of Qatar National Vision, Al Derham affirmed, highlighting QU’s enormous achievements at various levels which are dramatically demonstrated in its international reputation.

He pointed out to a recent study conducted by Stanford University in the US and published in 2022, which designated QU’s scientists and researchers as among the most outstanding scientists around the globe, adding that he boasts of having an elite of distinguished researchers at QU.

The number of scientists included in this study is an indicative of QU’s successful quest for trailblazing in research, education and producing high-quality and influential research, he outlined, pointing out that it indicates QU’s constant efforts in establishing innovative structure in research and education fields, as well as serving the community to be an attractive, scientific and inspirational beacon for all.

He asserted that the contribution with searches has not been solely confined to teachers, but QU’s students have also contributed with that and achieved great successes, reaping Gold and Silver medals during the recent years in several international scientific arena through Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC).

The university prepared axes of excellence and characteristics of graduates for QU’s students to have a scientifically and skillfully integrated personality with tenets and values that make them influential in the community, life and scientific research in a more inspirational way, he added.

HE President of QU explained that in order to achieve its ambitious objectives, the university has determined a fundamental four-pillar research in consistent with Qatar National Vision 2030, represented in energy, environment, health, vital medical sciences, IT and communications, as well as social and humanitarian sciences.

He pointed out that QU has engaged in conducting research and projects that served Qatar’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament and made it successful, such as stadiums’ cooling projects to be sustainable and smart devoid of carbon emissions.

Through a team from the College of Engineering and in cooperation with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the university developed smart systems and technologies for management and control of fans during the tournament, including technologies of face authentication and detection of abnormal incidences, Al Derham explained.
