Senate president receives Italian Deputy FM

Senate President, Faisal Fayez, received on Thursday Italian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Marina Sereni and an accompanying delegation, who are on an official visit to Jordan.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations and the importance of strengthening and developing them in various fields, especially in economic, investment, political and cultural domains, as well as the need to activate bilateral agreements to serve common interests.

Fayez commended Italy’s supportive positions of Jordan and His Majesty King Abdullah’s vision on the peace process in the region, which, he noted, is based on the two-state solution and relevant international legitimacy decisions to the Palestinian cause to enable the Palestinian people to achieve their legitimate rights.

The international community, he stressed, cannot remain silent on the “racist and hostile practices committed by the right-wing Israeli government against the Palestinian people”.

He also highlighted the ‘robustness’ of the Jordanian-Italian ties, underlining the need to develop and build on them so that they reach advanced levels of coordination and cooperation in various fields.

He called on Italy to play a greater role within the European Union to increase the aid provided to Jordan, adding that the stability and security of Jordan is very important to the stability of the region and the West.

Sereni stated that her visit to Jordan comes within the framework of strengthening relations between the two friendly countries in various fields, in addition to enhancing joint efforts to bring about peace in the Middle East.

Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, is a country that is respected by the international community and has a pivotal and essential role to bring about peace and stability in the region, the Italian official underscored.

She pointed out that there is always a need to listen to Jordan’s view on regional issues of mutual concern, adding that Jordan is a ‘valuable strategic partner’ for her country, as it plays a major role in combating extremism and terrorism. She also lauded Jordan’s role in hosting a large number of refugees and providing care for them.

She stressed Italy’s willingness to boost economic cooperation with Jordan, especially in the areas of food and water security, and to work to attract Italian investments to Jordan and increase the number of Italian tourists to the Kingdom.
