Stuttgart- Maria Sharapova has reached the Porsche Grand Prix quarter-finals with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova, earning some more precious ranking points.
Playing in her second match following a 15-month doping ban, Sharapova clinched her seventh victory in as many meetings with Makarova in 1 hour 19 minutes, wrapping up matters with two aces.
Sharapova, 30, lost all ranking points during her absence following a positive test for meldonium in January 2016, dpa reported.
She controversially received a wildcard for Stuttgart, as well as for upcoming events in Madrid and Rome, instead of having to work her way up through qualifiers or small tournaments.
She now has 100 points which would get her into the top 400. A title in Stuttgart, where she has won three times, is worth 470 points.
However, she needs further points to gain direct entry into the upcoming French Open and Wimbledon grand slams without having to sweat on getting wildcards.
