The President of the Republic: We support efforts to recover artifacts until the last piece of our national wealth is recovered

The President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, announced the recovery of (6,000) artifacts that were loaned to the United Kingdom in 1923 for a period of (100) years for study and research purposes.

The President confirmed, during a press conference held today, Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Baghdad International Airport, upon his return to the country from the United Kingdom after the conclusion of an official visit to attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III, that he brought with him (6000) artifacts dating back to different stages of the history of the civilizations of Iraq.

He added: “The return of these artifacts from the United Kingdom is the second largest process of recovering antiquities in the history of Iraq,” noting that this process embodies keenness to protect the cultural heritage that represents the national identity, the historical and cultural memory of the country and its great human significance.

During the conference, which was attended by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Ahmed Fakkak Al-Badrani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Omar Al-Barzanji, Director of the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage Laith Majeed, and Deputy British Ambassador to Iraq Serena Stone, President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid expressed his support for efforts to recover artifacts, even the last piece of our national wealth is being restored to the Iraqi Museum in a manner that preserves the nobility of this glorious history, appreciating the efforts that have been made, and praising the cooperation of the British Museum in recovering the loaned Iraqi antiquities.
