ABU DHABI, Frederick Kempe, President and CEO of the Atlantic Council, a nonpartisan organisation based in Washington, D.C., said the UAE has successfully attained a prominent stature in the global energy scene, due to its economic policy based on creating a balance between adopting environmental standards to address climate change and leveraging various energy sources.
In his statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Kempe stressed that the world is currently witnessing a historical critical phase, due to many political developments and the global race to achieve carbon neutrality, adding that the world must make critical decisions related to energy.
“Many countries are facing challenges regarding their ability to combine long-term security and short-term energy security,” he added. “The UAE has managed to attain its prominent international stature, by adopting energy policies based on low-carbon production, launching leading environmental projects and using hydrogen as an energy source, in addition to being a leading producer of low-cost solar power.”
Kempe affirmed that the UAE is the first oil producer in the Middle East to announce its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, reflecting its leadership in adopting the necessary measures to address climate change.
He noted that the UAE’s hosting of COP28 will coincide with the current international efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, stressing that COP28 will be a pioneering event in terms of highlighting the best solutions to achieving zero emissions worldwide.
Kempe lauded the UAE’s successful hosting of Expo 2020 Dubai, affirming that the international event represents a milestone in a world full of challenges.
