UN Women Executive Director lauds support of Sheikha Fatima for women worldwide

ABU DHABI, Dr. Sima Sami Bahous, Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), lauded the support of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), for women and her patronage of the International Conference for Women, Peace and Security (ICWPS).

She made this statement during her interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the ICWPS, which began yesterday.

Bahous also commended the work of the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Women, Peace and Security Centre, noting its importance to the country and the Arab region, as well as to Asia and Africa, as it trains women to work in the areas of peacekeeping and security, which aligns with the UN’s efforts to increase the number of women in its peacekeeping operations.

She then stressed that UN Security Council’s Resolution No. 1325 of 2000 affirms the importance of women’s equal participation and engagement in all efforts related to peacekeeping and strengthening security in conflict-torn areas around the world, as well as in the post-conflict rebuilding process.

Bahous highlighted the UAE’s key role in promoting issues related to UN Security Council’s the women, security and peace (WPS) agenda.

She explained that the conference aims to promote refraining from viewing women as victims, but rather as leaders and protectors of their families and communities, and main contributors to the quest of achieving peace and a better life, she added.

The conference is an opportunity to discuss violence against women, human trafficking, child marriage and women’s economic empowerment, and highlights the importance of drafting national legislations that enable women to flourish, she further added.

Bahous affirmed the importance of drafting plans and budgets that would ensure the participation of women in all fields, as well as implementing international laws and decisions in that regard.
