US STOCKS CLOSE SHARPLY HIGHER AFTER FIRST ROUND OF FRENCH ELECTION

New York, – US stocks closed sharply higher on Monday as investors cheered the results of the first round of French election, with Nasdaq hitting an all-time high.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 216.27 points, or 1.05%, to 20,764.03.

The S&P 500 added 25.45 points, or 1.08%, to 2,374.14.

The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 73.30 points, or 1.24%, to 5,983.82.

European equities also surged on Monday after the results announced, with French benchmark index CAC 40 soaring more than 4%.

In Asia, Tokyo stocks also jumped Monday as the market mood was buoyed after the first round of the French presidential election. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 1.37% to 18,875.88 points. (QNA)
