Washington, U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Sunday that about 1,000 troops withdrawn from northern Syria are expected to move to western Iraq.
The U.S. official said that troops in West Iraq will continue the campaign against Islamic State militants and "to help defend Iraq", the Washington Post and international newspapers reported.
Esper said that the ceasefire in northeastern Syria was generally holding, adding that no United States soldier will help establish the "safe zone" between Kurdish fighters and Turkey.
A senior Pentagon official said the United States would continue to monitor the area to ensure the security of prisons holding ISIS detainees.
