China’s new weather satellite ‘Fengyun-4B’ benefits more BRI countries

BEIJING: China’s Fengyun-4B (FY-4B) weather satellite has taken over operations from Fengyun-4A (FY-4A), resuming service on March 5 after a month of adjustment, according to China Meteorological Administration (CMA).

This switch will improve weather observation for some countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China’s Economic Daily reported.

The FY-4B satellite is poised to assume a crucial role in disaster weather monitoring and early warning systems, thereby bolstering the resilience of BRI countries against natural disasters, Zheng Xudong, a representative of the National Satellite Meteorological Centre, said.

The FY-4A satellite will continue to serve in a reduced capacity, maximising its remaining operational potential to support ongoing observations and services.

China’s weather satellites currently serve over 129 countries worldwide.
