Secretariat’s Chamber of Commerce receives a letter from UN private sector

The leadership of the Industrial Chamber of Commerce of the Capital Secretariat delivered a message from the United Nations private sector that ships should move directly to the port of Hodeida without hindrance, and provide the crenates and machinery needed to unload goods.

This came during the meeting of the President of the Industrial Chamber of Commerce in the Capital Sana’a, Ali Muhammad Al-Hadi, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, and the Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs of Yemen, William David Gresley.

In the presence of the Vice-Presidents of the Chamber, Mohamed Mohamed Salah and Hassan Ghalib Al-Siani, the meeting discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the Chamber and the United Nations Office in order to help alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

The meeting also reviewed the negative effects of the imposition of an advance inspection by the United Nations in the port of Djibouti of commercial vessels carrying goods, medicines and other goods; Before heading to the port of Hodeida, the resulting losses over the past eight years; Due to delays in the inspection procedures of vessels by UNVIM in the port of Djibouti, “Demerge” amounts on the inspected vessels, and their containers were not loaded in a timely manner.

In the meeting, the President of the Chamber, Al-Hadi, indicated that the industrial and commercial sector in Yemen suffered very large losses. As a result of the policy of closing the port of Hodeida to shipping containers in the past period, and the resulting severe shortage of food, medicine, fuel, and necessary life necessities, increased costs and burdens, increased poverty rates, and exacerbated the suffering of citizens and the private sector.

The United Nations should work to open the port of Hodeida to the movement of merchant vessels and facilitate the transport of goods; to alleviate suffering for the people.

The time has come for ships to move directly to the port of Hodeida, so as to facilitate easy transportation of goods. The actions carried out during the past period in Djibouti’s port were an obstacle, difficulty and heavy losses.

For his part, UN Coordinator Gresley indicated that the topic will be studied with the UN team, which will hold a meeting with the unvim, within the next two weeks, and the topic will be its top priority. The United Nations understands the difficulties and problems faced by Yemen’s private sector.

He underscored the support of the private sector and appreciated its role in Yemen’s economic activity.

During the meeting, the importance of restoring the capacity of the port of Hodeida, the provision of cranes and incubators, and the special machinery needed to transport and unload goods at the port of Hodeida was also stressed, that the Coalition bombed in 2015-2017, resulting in its decommissioning, and considering that the port of Hodeidah is very important to the life of the Yemeni people, which necessarily needs these machines immediately.
