The President Stresses The Importance Of Approving Realistic And Effective Recommendations To Address The Problem Of Combating Drugs

The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received today, at Baghdad Palace, the delegation of the Parliamentary Committee for Combating Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, headed by Dr. Adnan Al-Juhaishi.

At the outset of the meeting, the President praised the formation of a committee on the subject, and expressed readiness to support it in a way that achieves its goals and plans for all governorates to limit the spread of drugs, as he pointed out the need for the committee to include representatives from the governorates.

The President stressed, according to a statement by his media office, the need to take several initial steps in this file and support them through holding seminars and awareness workshops, as well as establishing institutions specialized in rehabilitating drug abuse cases.

In his talk with the members of the committee, he referred to the need to build a conscious culture through the media, and also touched on the call for establishing a drug control and treatment fund in draft Law No. (50) of 2017, where work has been done to fill many of the gaps in it through the draft law amendment that The Presidency of the Republic submitted it to the House of Representatives.

He explained the importance of approving realistic and effective recommendations to address a permanent problem that needs a serious stance, by controlling borders to prevent drug smuggling and combating corruption.

In their turn, the members of the delegation confirmed that the committee was formed from (15) members of the House of Representatives and that work was under way to establish a database, noting that the committee is the only one concerned with drugs in the Arab parliaments.

The delegation added that work is underway to establish clinics in all governorates to treat cases of addiction, stressing the need to support those charged with the duty to combat drugs, including officers and associates.

The members of the delegation also indicated that the media is an essential partner in the process of combating drugs, and its role must be activated in a way that achieves the goals and objectives in raising awareness and protecting our societies from this dangerous scourge.
