At least 30 people lost their lives while around 70 were injured as eight coaches of a train derailed in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province on Sunday, said officials.
Provincial Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah in a statement to media confirmed that 30 people were killed and around 70 others injured in the accident. He said that the injured could be shifted to Karachi if needed and directed local administration and health officials to expedite relief and rescue efforts.
While traveling from Karachi city to Rawalpindi city, eight coaches of the Hazara Express train, with around 1,000 passengers on board, derailed near the Sarhari Railway Station in Nawabshah district of Sindh. Rescue teams immediately reached the site of the incident and train operations suspended. Emergency was imposed in all the government-run hospitals around the district.
Minister for Railway, Khawaja Saad Rafique, in a statement said initial investigation showed that the train was travelling at a “reasonable” speed and (we) will investigate the incident.
