The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), in collaboration with the College of Nursing and Midwifery at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, has organised a three-day comprehensive workshop targeting participants in the National Mentorship Programme for Nursing and Midwifery Research.
Hosted by MoHAP’s National Committee for Nursing and Midwifery in Dubai, the event aimed to enhance the skills and capabilities of nursing and midwifery staff in conducting directed research studies under the mentorship of scientific research experts. During the gathering, trainees and their mentors discussed ways to develop a mentorship plan as they revised the programme’s requirements and goals.
The National Programme for Nursing and Midwifery Research was launched as part of the Ministry’s “Nebras: My Journey in the World of Nursing and Midwifery Research” initiative, which was rolled out in mid-June.
Additionally, 82 nurses and midwives from various health authorities, such as Emirates Hea
lth Services, Dubai Academic Health Corporation, Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), and Dubai Police Health Centre, took part in the workshop.
As many as 25 health research experts from prestigious academic institutions across the UAE, including the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), Fatima College of Health Sciences (FCHS), University of Sharjah, Higher Colleges of Technology, Gulf Medical College, and University of Wellington Dubai, were also present.
The workshop was specifically tailored for experts in nursing and midwifery research to qualify them as mentors in the National Mentoring Programme for Nursing and Midwifery Research. During the session, they were introduced to the programme’s objectives and structure through various lectures and interactive sessions. As part of the programme, nursing and midwifery professionals will have the opportunity to submit their research proposals as trainees.
Following the selection of practical research ideas, mentors will be assigned to each trainee t
o jointly develop a mentorship plan and timeline, utilising an integrated electronic platform for coordination. In addition to introducing the research mentorship programme in nursing and midwifery, the workshop discussed national and international trends in the field, professional development mechanisms, mentoring challenges, while also touching upon the roles of mentors and trainees. On the final day of the event, a meeting was held between the trainees and the trainers (experts in scientific research) to agree on a mentorship plan.
Dr. Sumaya Mohammed Al Blooshi, Head of the National Committee for Nursing and Midwifery Affairs at MoHAP, emphasised that the workshop marks a significant stride towards realising the ambitious Nebras initiative, which is aimed at supporting the nation’s strategic vision of cultivating a homegrown research culture within the nursing and midwifery domain. It also represents a pivotal milestone towards executing the National Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery (2022-2026), which
involves conducting nationally significant studies that underpin various programs, initiatives, and strategic blueprints, all backed by empirical and scientific principles.
Al Blooshi said, “The workshop reflects MoHAP’s steadfast commitment to enhancing the status of nursing and midwifery professions within our society and attracting both male and female Emirati citizens to embrace these fields.’
‘The Ministry will spare no effort to bolster the country’s healthcare workforce, endowing them with the requisite skills and tools to excel in their respective spheres while staying abreast of global best practices. We are determined to propel nursing and midwifery research to new heights,” she further said.
Al Balooshi stated that the workshop included interactive sessions and activities thoughtfully organised within an integrated work plan to acquaint trainers with the programme’s objectives and national vision in this field. This is to make sure they are capable of effectively mentoring the nursing and midwif
ery cadre trainees participating in the Nebras initiative.
‘We look forward to providing trainees with an ideal opportunity to promote their roles in delivering top-tier healthcare to every segment of society,’ she further said, adding that the Ministry is committed to hitting new heights by embracing best practices and fortifying and perpetuating our healthcare system in line with the UAE’s long-term vision for the next fifty years,” she added.
It is noteworthy that “Nebras: My Journey in the World of Nursing and Midwifery Research” was launched as part of the National Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery Roadmap 2022-2026, under the category of ‘Scientific Research and Evidence-Based Practices.
