IEA Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Summit delivers six key actions for secure, sustainable and responsible supply chains

PARIS, 28th September, 2023 (WAM) Almost 50 countries from continents across the world including large and emerging critical mineral producers and consumers came together today with leaders from industry, investment and civil society at the first IEA Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Summit to share experiences and discuss effective courses of action on critical minerals to ensure rapid and secure energy transitions. The first-of-its-kind international summit builds on the ministerial mandate given to the IEA in 2022 to further its work on critical minerals, the materials at the heart of key clean energy technologies such as wind turbines, electric vehicles and solar panels. The IEA has been asked by governments around the world to make recommendations on options to diversify supplies of critical minerals and clean energy technology manufacturing. To deliver on this, the IEA is creating a new Energy Security and Critical Minerals Division within its Secretariat dedicated to these issues. “The level of over-concentration that we see in critical minerals markets today is unlike that for any other major commodity we have come to rely on in the modern world. History has shown us that failing to properly diversify supplies and trade routes of essential resources comes with profound risks,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “Locking in secure and sustainable supplies of critical minerals for the clean energy transition has quickly become a top priority for governments, companies and investors around the world. US reveals lease-reduction plan in Gulf of Mexico

US President’s Joe Biden’s Administration Friday revealed its expected plan for its offshore oil and gas leasing in the next five years in the Gulf of Mexico.

Reflecting the US rapid and accelerating shift to clean energy, Interior Department announces fewest offshore oil and gas lease sales in history in the Proposed Final Program for 2024-2029, Department of the Interior said.

The plan phases down oil and gas leasing in the Gulf of Mexico; will enable offshore wind program to continue to rapidly grow.

The Proposed program includes zero oil and gas lease sales in the Atlantic, Pacific and Alaskan water, it noted.

Consistent with the requirements of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) concerning offshore conventional and renewable energy leasing, the Department of Interior today (Friday) released the Proposed Final Program and Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the 2024-2029 National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program (National OCS Program), it said.

The Program includes a maximum of three potential oil and gas lease sales – the fewest oil and gas lease sales in history – in the Gulf of Mexico Program Area scheduled in 2025, 2027 and 2029, the department pointed out.

“The Biden-Harris administration is committed to building a clean energy future that ensures America’s energy independence,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.

“The Proposed Final Program, which represents the smallest number of oil and gas lease sales in history, sets a course for the Department to support the growing offshore wind industry and protect against the potential for environmental damage and adverse impacts to coastal communities”.

King Khalid University Ranks 501st globally as per Times Rankings

King Khalid University climbed 300 places to rank 501st globally, according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Moreover, in the International Dimension Rankings, the university was ranked 117th globally and sixth locally among the top 200 international universities.

According to Vice President of Post Graduate Studies and Scientific Research Hamid Al-Qarni the university has achieved a significant milestone as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at global recognition. The plan’s objective is to rank among the top 200 universities worldwide by 2030, which is one of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

This accomplishment has improved the university’s institutional and academic reputation regionally and internationally.

Director of the International Classification Unit Dr. Sami Al-Shehri said that the Times Classification of International Universities is based on five main areas. These areas are education (29.5%), research environment (29%), quality of research (30%), international dimension (7.5%), and industry (4%). The classification also includes 18 performance indicators that are professionally evaluated to ensure a balanced ratio for all academic and research aspects of universities.

This year’s rankings included more than 1,900 universities from 120 countries worldwide.
